Family Selection

Habitat for Humanity of Missoula accepts applications for potential homeowners in the Spring and Fall.  If you are interested in partnering with Habitat for a new home, call the Habitat office to obtain an application.  If you have any further questions, please call the office at 549-821.

Our next family selection meetings will be held on Sunday, March 21st, at 2 pm at the Missoula Public Library and Wednesday, March 24th at 7 pm at Opportunity Resources.  There will be no child care provided for either meeting.

our qualifications

Families are selected based on the following:

     1. Need: An Applicant's family have need if they pay more than 30% of their income towards rent, the home they are living in is too small for the number of people, their home is substandard, the roof leaks, the plumbing or wiring is bad, etc. and/or children (if applicable) do not have a safe place to play.

     2. Ability to Pay: Habitat sells the completed home to partners at cost with no interest charged.  We use a mortgage based on at least 25% of their income going to payments.  Payments include taxes, insurance, and a principal payment.  Currently we accept applications from people who earn a gross income of 40-60% of the area median income.  As of February 2008 this was $22,150 to $33,250 for a family of four.

special exception

Just for our condominiums, our Board of Directors has approved an exception to our regular rules.  You may apply if your income is 40% - 80% of the median.

See the chart below.

     3. Willingness to Partner: Habitat requires each partner to be responsible for 500 hours of "Sweat Equity" (volunteer work time) with Habitat.  The people who will be living in the home must work 250 and the additional 250 can be done by friends and family.  100 of these hours must be done on the actual construction of a home.  The sweat equity gives a sense of self pride as well as a new knowledge and understanding of the building process and your home in general.

     4. Residency:  Habitat requires applicants must have lived or worked in Missoula County for at least one year prior to submitting an application.

Because we need to be sure that people who might want to apply know about Habitat – how we work, what is required of partners, etc. – it is a good idea for interested people to get in touch with us directly. If you would like to learn more, call 549-8210 or email us at habmsla@habitatmsla.org
